On Holding Craters 22% as Tuesday's Tape Splits Earnings Winners From Losers

The Swiss running-shoe maker fell to a two-year low after trimming its sales outlook, while Sea Limited, Cardinal Health and Plug Power rallied on their own reports in an otherwise flat pre-CPI session.
On Holding Craters 22% as Tuesday's Tape Splits Earnings Winners From Losers

Tuesday's session delivered this earnings season's now-familiar verdict structure: indexes barely moved while individual reporters swung violently. With the S&P 500 up just 0.05% at 7,757 by mid-morning and the Nasdaq off 0.07%, per Investrade's session recap, the real action was concentrated in a handful of names that reported overnight and before the bell. The most dramatic was On Holding, which plunged as much as 22% to roughly a two-year low, according to Yahoo Finance, and was still down about 18% by mid-morning.

On's numbers explain the severity. Second-quarter net sales of 850.3 million Swiss francs rose 13.5% from a year earlier, or 21.6% in constant currency, but missed the 878.2 million-franc consensus, Yahoo Finance reported. The sorest spot was the Americas, On's largest market at more than half of sales, where constant-currency growth slowed to 13% from 17% in the first quarter. Wholesale revenue grew just 4.8% in reported terms, a sharp deceleration, even as direct-to-consumer sales jumped 26% to reach 45.7% of the total.

The company also cut its full-year revenue outlook, guiding to constant-currency growth in the low-20% range, down from a prior floor of 23%, implying net sales of 3.47 billion to 3.56 billion francs, per Yahoo Finance. Management paired the trim with a raised gross-margin target of at least 65%, up from 64.5%, and the quarter itself was profitable in ways last year's was not: net income of 105 million francs reversed a year-ago loss, and gross margin expanded to 65.4% from 61.5%. The company's finance chief said On would not compromise full-price integrity for volume in what he called a heavily promotional environment in some markets, according to the report. Investors sold first anyway.

The rest of the tape showed the other side of the trade. Sea Limited gained about 10% after posting second-quarter revenue of $7.79 billion, up 48% year over year, per Investrade. Cardinal Health rose roughly 7% after its fiscal fourth-quarter earnings cleared estimates by a wide margin, and Plug Power jumped about 12% on better-than-expected results. The market remains perfectly willing to pay up for upside surprises; it simply shows no patience for deceleration.

Losers beyond On reinforced the point. Purple Innovation collapsed 23% after soft second-quarter results and a cut to its 2026 revenue guidance, now $420 million to $440 million, according to Investrade. As with Insulet and DaVita last week, the common thread among the session's casualties was not the quarter itself but the forward numbers attached to it.

The macro backdrop kept index-level moves muted. Investrade described markets as marking time ahead of consumer inflation data due Wednesday and producer prices Thursday, with the 10-year Treasury yield climbing toward 4.7%. Small-business optimism rose to 99.8, the highest reading since August 2025, while existing home sales slipped 1.7% month over month.

For a season in which FactSet says 86% of S&P 500 companies have beaten earnings estimates, Tuesday was another reminder that beats are the baseline, not the bar. On Holding beat on adjusted earnings, expanded margins and swung to profit, and still suffered one of its worst sessions as a public company because the growth trajectory bent. With CoreWeave reporting after Tuesday's close and Cisco on deck Wednesday, the same grading curve is waiting.
